Secure Credit Card Processing Solutions for Hotels
In the beginning
Charge cards have been around for almost a century now. The first one, created in the 1920s, was used specifically for automobile owners to buy fuel, and by the 1930s several companies adopted the practice of offering and accepting charge cards, however they were easily counterfeited since most of these cards were printed on paper card stock. In response, new cards were stamped from sheet metal and embossed with the customer’s name, city, and state. And to further combat counterfeiting, these newer charge cards were often held by the issuing store rather than by the customer. Clearly, security has been an ongoing issue for card makers and card holders—even from the very beginning.
Technology changed the process
Modern technology has afforded credit card manufacturers new ways to protect cardholders from unauthorized transactions due to counterfeiting: durable plastic, watermarked logos which fluoresce under black light, and holographic logos—all of which are extremely difficult to duplicate. But what about online transactions? Only the numbers on the card and the owner’s personal information are needed—thus completely eliminating the effectiveness of the physical protection embedded in the card itself.
Security changed the policy
Online credit card fraud spawned the need for strict policies enforced by issuing banks, and so the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) was formed in 2006, founded by five global payment brands: American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, Mastercard Worldwide, and Visa, Inc. But according to a recent Wikipedia article, “...improvements to card security have been introduced to the more common credit card networks, but none has proven to help reduce credit card fraud so far.” Gearco, however, provides a solution that is PCI compliant and proven to increase security.
Gearco changed the solution
Using Gearco’s Hotelgears credit card solution, security is greatly enhanced and is handled on two levels:
First, as the check-in procedure begins, the customer’s photo ID card is physically scanned directly into the Gearco Property Management System and saved as an image while the data from the card is automatically extracted and is used to populate the required fields within the software. This step not only helps front desk clerks to quickly process the customer’s request for lodging, it also helps prove that the customer was, in fact, present at the time of the transaction should a dispute ever arise.
Second, Gearco Property Management Systems process credit cards using a method that employs tokens, which are stored in a secure online vault and are used as proxies to complete transactions rather than using the actual card number. Even if a tokens were somehow stolen, they are completely useless to thieves. Plus, these tokens last as long as you want them to. No longer must you fight those default, ever-expiring holds that are initially placed on a customer’s account by the issuing banks; now you can rest easy knowing that all charges—current and future—are easily and securely handled.
